I have been following singer/songwriter Luanne Hunt's career for quite some time and she never disappoints. The title of her latest - and eighth - effort, "The Singles Sessions," is slightly misleading, as I expected a clutch of songs dealt out without any particular order and perhaps they all are "singles," but the album flows smoothly, keeping you listening from beginning to end. Part of this can be attributed to Hunt's beautiful voice, as well as the talented musicians behind her, but the rest is the selection of tunes, all country and folk based. This is an overall soothing listen, but don't be fooled-- it won't lull you into a stupor, as there is much diversity here too.
Hunt knows how to deliver a song. Her emotions come through, yet every word is clear, allowing you to understand the stories she tells. She has a good range and a very pleasant timbre. Her talents also reach nicely to her songwriting. There are three cuts on the album penned by Hunt with various partners, including the opening tune, "Carolina Moon," which is co-written by Steve Hunt.
True to my usual routine, I listened to "The Singles Sessions" the first time through without looking at the j-card, as I didn't want to be influenced by anything I might read. Later, I kept returning to "Carolina Moon," as the melody and words caught me, along with the hint of bluegrass. It's one of those songs that you can't resist singing along with and I think it should get some good airplay. It is my favorite selection on the effort.
I also was impressed by Hunt's version of Dan Fogelberg's "Leader of the Band," which features additional vocals by Patrick Hurd. It's sweet and emotional and slightly dreamy- nicely done!
The sixth cut, "It's Only a Paper Moon," is quite unexpected among the other selections and offers an opportunity for Hunt to show a little extra versatility. This old classic is a good match for her voice and puts just the right amount of levity into the album for the selections before and after it. I would love to hear Hunt perform American Songbook selections sometime because she definitely has the chops.
"Thorn," a Christian number, ends the release. If you're Christian, you will find the song inspiring, but if you're not, you will still enjoy this piece for its writing and presentation.
"The Singles Sessions" will please country and folk fans with ease, as well as anyone seeking an album that can be played almost anywhere. It's perfect background music when friends visit, soothing while you're fighting traffic and great for you to listen to while curled up in your favorite chair. Visit Hunt's Web site to hear some cuts and check out her other albums. So, Luanne, what are you planning for album nine?

"All of the aspects of ‘Solace In The Wind’ are without flaw and are truly beautiful. To my mind, the most impressive work here is in the writing. The lyrics and melody have a familiar style, but are wholly new. Your roots are showing and they are indeed deep in the sweet soil of American Folk music. You deserve a worldwide audience. I unreservedly love what you've done."
